Youth Theatre

Let children experience the joy of theatre

Youth theatre as learning

When children spend five years in our Centre, from the age of 3 to 8 y.o., they don’t want to leave Drama Rainbow Education because they know that they are in the process of creating something significant for themselves, and a positive relationship with the world. This was why we began to develop a Youth Centre in 2014; an opportunity, for 8-16 y.o., to continue the development of their imagination and the ability to speak their minds through theatre performance and drama. It presents an opportunity to act and apply what they have learned in the DiE Centre through theatre, and make performances that add their voices to the wider world. The groups meet every week, in a process that can last up to 38 weeks (for 90 minute classes that extend to 4 hours nearer the production), made up of 14 weeks exploration, 8 weeks ‘making’, 8 weeks rehearsals, and 8 weeks extended project activity. All members of the group (teacher-facilitators included) are involved in all aspects of the production of the play. In essence, this is project-based learning. In the process of creating the production, children participate in: improvisation, directing and script-writing as well as design, publicity, planning, management and administration, fundraising, making costumes and props, and many other processes involved in making theatre. These important experiences finally culminate in an hour long (sometimes longer) performance, but the learning process extends over a year. After the performances are over, members of the Company will also participate in theme-related social practices and an exhibition in a range of media about the play at the end of the semester. Our teacher-facilitators will also help children, as they do on the DiE courses, build a year-long record of the group’s comprehensive and extraordinary learning journey and achievements.

Integration

Community learning

For children and young people aged 8-16 y.o., theatre provides a welcoming, protected, focused, and meaningful environment. Our members, with parental support, engage in a stress-free, non-academic learning environment, integrating the project, and afterwards, what has been learned from the experience, into family life. You can not imagine there is a better way to learn than this.

Parents group

“After the show, 19 children rushed to raise their hands to take the microphone, share their thoughts, and answer questions from the audience. This was the ‘scene’ that impressed me most. It made me think about our classes and why our children stop talking… The script came from the children’s own mouths, they were born in the Drama Rainbow Education classroom and performed today in Beijing’s Renyi Juyin Theatre. They have been attentively listened to by both children and adults. Young citizens were born here.”

Collective creation

The collective voice of young people in China!

Our Youth Theatre members do not need to recite their lines in the conventional manner, because they really understand and master the story through a year of exploration. The lines in the performance are either improvised (such as in The Examination), or recorded by the teacher after exploration, and then rehearsed (such as Invisible Me ,524, etc). Regardless of the model we use, improvising from a story, or commissioning a play with improvised sections, the creation of each project is collective from the beginning to the end. One in which the children have a huge investment; a project that has a deep connection to their lives. Theatre making requires great discipline and structure if the theatre makers are going to be free to be truly creative. Our Youth Theatre offers our children the full opportunity to do this, and it has become an iconic brand of Drama Rainbow’s work!
